Hubby wants to buy a FAL

Hello Guys and Gals, My husband has his heart set on a FAL. He's thinking about a Springfield Armory, or maybe an DSA. I'm shocked at how high these guns are. Been watching on Gunbroker and GunsofAmerica. Does anyone have any thoughts on where to check. Also would luv to here any info about these type of guns that anyone is willing to share. Did find a FAL forum on a gun site...hehe....Hes been reading the posts there. Thanks Everyone:36_3_12:

Try falfiles.com.

DSA are the "gold standard" now as far as FALs, but they are a bit hard to come by (at least new - LONG waiting list.) I have a Springfield, they are very nice. I'd stay away from the various FrankenFALs (Century, home-built, etc.) unless he wants a project, since you don't know what you are getting.

They are pricey. Ammo is pricey (milsurp has dried up, and costly when you do find it.) Mags are cheap. Great gun for when the robots come (and they will.)

Well, finding a fair deal in this environment is gonna be tough.:thumpdown

I do think (hope) the market will soften IF CONgress doesn't pass any strict gun laws this year...don't hold your breath.

Izzy FAL's are pricey too but man are they Schweeet !

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=120986693

Built on an IMBEL receiver, I'd put this 2nd only to DSA.

Re: Hubby wants to buy a FAL

Built w/IMBEL receiver at $900 >> http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=121075013

DSA like mine $1425 BUY-it-now >> http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=121321417

An L1A1 "inch" patter for $950+ >> http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=121140753

The only problem with the L1A1 is finding mags to fit......it doesn't accept the more common 'metric' mags.

DSA accepts both I believe although all of mine are metric mags.

I second the no-vote on Century Arms FALs. I've got one of their thumbhole stock L1A1 Sporter rifles, and had to do some home gunsmithing to fix a headspace problem. Some of the better FAL gunsmiths (T Mark Graham, for example) refuse to build a rifle on a Century receiver.

While mags may have been cheap, they are no longer as cheap nor as available as they used to be. A common price nowadays is ~$15 a piece. A wonderful wife would buy her darling husband a couple dozen FAL mags while they're still available. Wideners has them for $11 each or 10 for $95. See:

http://wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?i...19&dir=625|629

I bought my last half dozen from www.gunthings.com ( see http://gunthings.com/falmag.htm ) back in August for about $10 each, but now they're up to $16 each.

Remember - these are "high capacity" mags, just oozing evilness & begging to be banned. Think of the children!:sarc:

Re: Hubby wants to buy a FAL

Look for an Imbel receiver. I like the DSA STG-58 with integrated bipod, but DSA is high priced (I didn't say "over-priced" - they are exceptional quality). This past summer I found Imbel FALs for as low as $900 FTF. Things have probably changed since then, however.

Probably more accurate and just as reliable, but it will destroy the brass when it ejects. You can't reload from a PTR-91.

Based on reports I've read and from other enthusiasts........when it comes to reliability it takes a back seat to the FAL.

Re: Hubby wants to buy a FAL

Data points:
1) Cartridges fired in HK91 fluted chambers CAN be reloaded, nothing special here.
2) I have run 2000 rounds through an HK91 in an afternoon, NO cleaning, NO malfunctions.
3) I have been present for in excess of 12,000 rounds fired through two HK91 rifles, and have never seen a single malfunction of any description with the HK.
NOT ONE failure to feed, chamber, extract or fire.

Now add MUD........any difference ?

If HK91's are all that then I might be interested in acquiring one for my collection. I really can't speak much on the topic since I'm FAL biased.

Re: Hubby wants to buy a FAL

Thanks for the opinions, I myself have never had any problems at all with my HK- 91, and I've been told adding a port buffer will eliminate dented brass, and you won't have to chase 'em down, the only thing I've ever heard were that the tolerances were better on the HK, but as many FN's are and have been out there, I think they've been proven
